As a reporter and presenter for NTR's yearly broadcast and report on fantastic world renowned Soul and Jazz Festival North Sea Jazz Festival , I spoke to the ever so lovely, sweet and talented singer and songwriter, Lianne LA Havas, at the NSJF 2022 edition.

We zien het nummer 'Funk Aspirin' en een interview Erik Rodríguez, oftewel Cimafunk, op het North Sea Jazz Festival 2022. Het eerste deel van de naam Cimafunk verwijst naar de cimarrón, de Afro-Cubanen die slavernij ontvluchtten en zich ertegen verzetten. Het tweede deel verwijst naar de muziek die de Afro-Cubaanse rockster de vrijheid verschaft om te innoveren met ritme, groove en feest. Cimafunk, het alter ego van zanger, componist en producer Erik Alejandro Iglesias Rodriguez, geeft de sterke traditie van latin muziek een ongenadig funky draai om de oren. Op zijn geprezen album El Alimento uit 2021 werkte naast Lupe Fiasco en CeeLo Green ook George Clinton (Parliament-Funkadelic) mee. Die noemt hem ‘the one, the next one’. Chucho Valdés, hoeder van de Afro-Cubaanse jazz, ziet goedkeurend toe dat Cimafunk ‘Afro-Cuban and African American’ verenigt. Ook in Cuba zelf wordt hij omarmd door millennials die hoop putten uit de manier waarop hij zowel de Afrikaanse en Latino roots als het Amerikaanse showmanschap eer aandoet. Twee nummers en een interview met zangeres Marie-Pierra Kakoma (Lous) op het North Sea Jazz Festival 2022. We zien de nummers 'Kisé' en 'Dilemme'. Marie-Pierra Kakoma, beter bekend als Lous and the Yakuza, heeft een roerig leven achter de rug. Geboren in de Democratische Republiek Congo en met haar vader en moeder gevlucht voor de burgeroorlog, belandde zij via Rwanda in Brussel. Daar werd zij fotomodel, schrijfster, tekenares, kunstenares en muzikante. En dat terwijl haar ouders, beide dokters, een medische carrière voor haar hadden uitgestippeld. Maar Marie-Pierra is eigenzinnig. Ze noemde zichzelf Lous (een anagram van ‘soul’) en doopte haar muzikale team The Yakuza. Op haar autobiografische debuutalbum Gore (2020) mixt het 25-jarige talent zang en rap op een, volgens The Guardian, hypnotiserende wijze. Ze vat daarop haar turbulente leven samen in een half uur, en schuwt niet de keiharde realiteit te beschrijven van een jonge zwarte vrouw in het hedendaagse Europa. Twee nummers en een interview met zangeres Lady Blackbird op het North Sea Jazz Festival 2022. We zien de nummers 'Five Feet Tall' en 'It'll never happen again'. Wanneer je als artiest in een adem wordt genoemd met legendes als Nina Simone, Etta James en Billie Holliday, ligt de lat natuurlijk meteen torenhoog. Toch bezwijkt Lady Blackbird, het alter ego van de Amerikaanse Marley Munroe, absoluut niet onder deze bewonderende stemvergelijking. De singer-songwriter uit Los Angeles groeide op in New Mexico en ontdekte door gospel haar liefde voor muziek, waarna ze op jonge leeftijd al zelf op het podium belandde. Tegenwoordig combineert ze eigen werk en klassieke jazz- en soulballads, zoals op haar bejubelde debuutalbum Black Acid Soul (2021). Dat werd opgenomen in de befaamde Studio B in Los Angeles’ Sound Studios. Haar album had qua geluid en gevoel zomaar uit de tijd van haar grote voorbeelden kunnen komen. Lady Blackbird betovert met haar krachtige, doorleefd klinkende vocalen en zorgt voor een live-ervaring die op een indringende en bemoedigende manier de ziel raakt. We zien de nummers 'Go Home', 'Morning Blue' en een interview met Gaidaa op het North Sea Jazz Festival 2022. De Soedanees-Nederlandse singer/songwriter Gaidaa werkte zich op tot een van de interessantste neo-soultalenten van de afgelopen jaren. Producer Full Crate hoorde de zangeres in 2018 en was onder de indruk. Samen maakten ze 'A Storm On A Summers Day', wat leidde tot Gaidaas doorbraak. Inmiddels is het nummer ruim 20 miljoen keer beluisterd op Spotify. Een jaar later nodigde YouTube-platform COLORS haar uit om in hun studio haar single Morning Blue op te nemen, als onderdeel van een groter project om aandacht te vragen voor het politieke en sociale klimaat in Soedan. In 2020 gooide Gaidaa hoge ogen op Eurosonic Noorderslag en verscheen de bejubelde EP Overture. Daarop staan acht nummers die zich kenmerken door verfijnde soul met akoestische instrumenten en verbluffende zang. Gaidaa zingt oprechte en betekenisvolle teksten waarin ze haar hele ziel blootgeeft. North Sea Jazz Festival is één groot soul en jazzfeest. Hired as one of ROFFA's CREATORS for 'Het Wereldmuseum' in Rotterdam, I was asked to create vlogs on themes that have to do with modern day culture. In most of them our beautifull city Rotterdam, it's diverse and inspiring community and all the amazing cultures that come together in this city as well as in the Netherlands as a whole, are the decor of intriguing conversations. In this particular vlog I visit Aruban costume designer Rossini van Wijk in his home. We catch him in the middle of finishing the costumes for Summer Carnival in Rotterdam. His team, loaded with glueguns, glitter and sequin tells us passionately about the utter joy of celebrating an event that comes as easy as breathing. If you don't feel Rossin's energy after watching this clip, I am pretty sure you haven't been paying attention!

In this particular vlog I visit a fashion temple in Surinam. Don't think Versace or Michael Kors, but think of colorfull and vibrant prints and patterns poured into authentic and tradional Suriname designs, wonderfull headpieces, and a more than wonderfull history lesson, that's painfully beautiful and beautifully painfull considering the history and heritage of the ancestors of the current Surinames population.
